"Special education" is a misnomer.

It isn’t about providing special education or serving special students. It’s about leveling the playing field and approaching learning with a holistic point of view. Students all learn in different ways, some better with their eyes, others with their ears or hands, and all with practice. The key is to present information that activates as many of those different ways as possible. We want students not simply to understand but to understand as completely as possible, meaning from multiple perspectives as well. Educators are therefore responsible for providing explanations in different modalities – visual aids, drawings, and diagrams; dialogue and discussion; and experiential learning to name a few. After all, students must learn not only about concepts but also how to use them.
